SMOSH
As a neurodivergent individual, when I become a fan of something, I go all in. I am the biggest fangirl when it comes to the things I adore, and there are so many to choose from. However, for the sake of the assignment, I am going to choose what I have been obsessing over lately: Smosh.
Smosh is an entertainment company with multiple YouTube channels. This year is their 20th anniversary of their main channel. They have a ton of content, both scripted and improvised, and they post on YouTube daily. I love it because they create many diverse types of content that can appeal to all sorts of audiences.
I have been a longtime fan of Smosh and their cast and crew. I began watching Smosh because I used to watch So Random, and I saw that some of my favorite actors from that were on a YouTube channel and have been hooked ever since. The company is full of creative talent, and I would love to be a part of it someday. Most of the people involved do many different jobs within the company; an actor will get the opportunity to produce, pitch, write, or direct, and many of the crew have been included in front of the camera as well. It is fun and exciting, and I am completely invested in it.
I express my fandom in many ways. I share their content on my social media pages and with friends. I am also a Smosh member, so I get to engage in the chats during their live streams and see early content. I also have purchased tickets and merchandise from their store. I have not written any fanfiction, but they regularly act out some of the AO3 fanfiction that Smosh fans have created, so I have seen a lot of that. I think the fanfics of the actors are a bit gross, but sometimes I get ideas about stories with their characters that I'd love to create. I consistently post in the Smosh Reddit forum and on YouTube comments. I follow the company Instagram and TikTok profiles and the profiles of cast and crew members. I also get ideas for fanart I'd like to post.
Smosh has inspired me, because I believe I have found my wheelhouse with short, scripted writing, and YouTube is the platform that that works best at. I want to get a job in a company that will be supportive of my desire to try different things, and I know from all my obsessive fangirl deep dives about the cast and crew that Smosh is great for a creative mind to thrive, even if that means that the person must move on from the company, because they have kept a great relationship with former cast and crew members. They also allow their cast and crew to do work outside of the company; cast members have starred in other shows, had their own YouTube content on their personal channels, or have guest starred on other YouTube channels.
They also work well with other YouTube talents; they often have YouTubers as guests on their shows. I think that's one of the best ways to get in that sphere. Networking and marketing myself... the two things about becoming a known writer that are absolutely necessary, that terrify the stuffing out of me. I'd love to work behind the scenes, helping develop and implement their shows and develop their characters.
